Our lab has spent many years investigating polymers as drug carriers for therapeutic or diagnostic applications. Early in our research we adopted methodology developed by environmental toxicologists to assess the health impacts of polymeric nanomaterials in the body, especially in the lungs. This interdisciplinary approach has enriched our biomedical research but also posed interesting challenges. Currently, we are again working across disciplinary boundaries to generate nano- and microplastics with defined characteristics. These will be used in studies to understand the health impacts of environmental plastics.
